Malik Maaza
Professor
UNESCO UNISA Africa Chair in Nanosciences & Nanotechnology
SA
Biography
Dr Maaza, a native of Algeria/North Africa holds an undergraduate degrees in Solid State Physics & Photonics from University of Oran-Algeria & Paris VI-France University under the supervision of Prof. Marie MAY. He holds a PhD in Neutron Optics, from the University of Paris VI-France under the guidance of Prof. Florin ABELES. He has about 17 years of experience in nano-sciences with a focus on nano-photonics applications. Previous interests include investigation of surface-interface phenomena, low dimensional systems and nano-materials using optical based spectroscopies & large facilities such as synchrotrons and neutron research reactors while in France, Austria, Russia & Germany mainly. Dr Maaza has produced numerous formal scientific publications & scientific reports. Dr Maaza has co-initiated the South African National Laser Centre & was instrumental in initiating & implementing the African Laser Centre, a continental scheme supported by the International Commission of Optics (ICO) and the Abdus Salam ICTP. Likewise, Dr. M. Maaza has initiated the South African Nanotechnology Initiative (SANi) as well as the Nanosciences African Network (NANOAFNET) supported by ICTP & IPPSSweden and for which he is the chairman elect. Currently, he leads the nanosciences laboratories of the Materials Research Group at iThemba LABS- National Research Foundation of South Africa. He is a representative of the Lasers, Atoms & Molecules African network (LAMNETWORK) in South Africa. Dr Maaza is involved in numerous international co-operation programs in nanosciences with an obvious focus on nano-photonics & novel optical materials. Being involved in numerous international & national committees and advisory boards, he is a regular associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics-Trieste (ICTP). Moreover, he is currently the Vice-President of the National Council of Scientists & Engineers of France: Section South-Africa. Dr. M. Maaza has and is involved in co-supervision of numerous postgraduate students from the developing countries. His main interests are related to both fundamental investigations & technological applications in the field of neutron optics, X-rays optics & UV-VIS-NIR optics with a particular focus on nano-scaled photonics.
